WYCOMBE WORK
In his book 'The History of Chair Making in High Wycombe' L.J.Mayes considers that the trade began in the town towards the end of 18th century, with the abundance of locally available timber.
He goes on to say that the main product of the town was the 'common chair': the windsor, cane and rush seat chairs, which came to be known as Wycombe Work.
In the late nineteenth century there was an expansion into the higher classes of furniture, then the reserve of London and Manchester.
